How to find out your Windows computer name

Sometimes a computer loses its connection (or is inadvertently not properly connected) to the monitoring system, N-Able. In these scenarios, the Help Desk team generally can reinstall the agent remotely, but to do so, they would need the Computer Name. This article shows you how to find the computer name.

1. First, right-click on the Windows icon in the task bar, and click on System.

2. This will pop up a new window, and near the top should be "Device Name". In the picture, this computer's name is "TNS-VM-PKBG-3A"


Alternatively, you can type the letters CMD into the search box next to the Windows logo...

4. and hit Enter. This will pop up a command prompt. Type in "hostname" and hit Enter.

5. The response will be the computer's name. Do not be concerned if it has "tns.local" after the name - that's expected on domain-joined machines (which all user-assigned devices are).
